Preflight BY DEBRA

Preflight BY DEBRA CLEGHORN | EXECUTIVE EDITOR People & Planes We understand that the RC aircraft hobby is just as much, if not more, about the people as it is the planes. This month, we’re excited to bring you a feature story about Marc Sharpe, a Canadian police constable who turned his love of model planes into an important asset for his day job. “RC Detectives” details how Marc and the Ontario Provincial Police are using RC aircraft to survey accident and crime scenes and to provide critical forensic evidence. I hope you’ll enjoy this story, and if you use RC in your working life, we’d love to hear about it. Another personal story comes to us from our longtime friend Bob Walker, one of the founders of Robart, well-known for their stock and custom RC landing gear. Bob recently completed test flights of his 1/3-scale Benoist flying boat, which he built to help celebrate the centennial of the world’s first scheduled passenger airline service. See this month’s “Final Approach” for the full story, and be sure to go to ModelAirplaneNews. com to watch the video of the plane’s inaugural flight. From easy-flying Cubs to high-powered Mustangs, tail-draggers encompass a wide variety of aircraft types and styles, so every pilot should know how to fly one. In “Tame Your Tail- Mark Sharpe of the Ontario Provincial Police force holds one of the UAVs he uses to help gather evidence. Dragger,” we show you the ins and outs of taildragger takeoffs, landings, and how to deal with crosswinds. Of course, practice makes perfect, so after you’ve read these flight techniques, we recommend that you practice them on a flight simulator. If you don’t yet have a sim, the new RealFlight 6.5, which we review this month, is definitely worth a look with its incredible graphics and true-to-life physics. It also has 95 models that you can fly, many of which are—you guessed it!—tail-draggers. For over 80 years, Model Airplane News has been your source for RC news, reviews, and howto’s, and with your help, we’ll do our best to continue that legacy. What would you like to see more (or less!) of in your magazine? Please send me an email at debrac@airage.com; I look forward to hearing from you. Kick Up Your Flight Skills!
