F I R S T D R I V E 2012

F I R S T D R I V E 2012 CHEVROLET CAMARO ZL1 First shown as a concept car in 2006, the fifthgeneration Camaro immediately stuck out as a nostalgic throwback to the first-generation car of the late 1960s with its broad-shouldered fenders, menacing grille, and steep windshield. The first production units went on sale in spring 2009 as 2010 model year vehicles, and in 2012 the flagship ZL1 model was introduced as Chevrolet celebrated the Camaro’s 45th anniversary. On top of several ZL1-only trim options like huge 20-inch wheels, the ZL1 borrows the 6.2L LSA supercharged V8 from the Cadillac CTS-V, pumping out 580 tire-shredding horsepower and making it the fastest production Camaro ever. The shaft-driven, touring car-style chassis is beefed up and braced in the right areas to form a rigid and durable structure to withstand years of pavementpounding abuse, with the center driveshaft driving the gear differentials at each end for maximum traction; though just one of the current crop of cars is 4WD in real life, the added driveability of these radio-controlled counterparts more than justifies the negligible lapse in total scale-correctness. There’s already enough of it to go around – all three of these cars are fully licensed replicas, with a tip of the cap from the full-size manufacturer, acknowledging just how much they look like the real thing. Tucked beneath the gorgeously adorned bodies are low-profile tires on body-specific wheels, and all three use wider rear meats for extra grip. Inside, you get Spektrum’s DX2E radio system for glitchfree control, a brushed 540 motor/ESC combo, and an 1800mAh NiMH stick pack with included charger. A center driveshaft spins inside a protective tunnel between oil-filled gear differentials housed in sealed gearboxes, protecting the moving parts from debris. Double wishbone suspension with oil-filled shock absorbers makes for an easy-driving, controllable vehicle to whip around the local lot. The 1960s ended with a bang, especially in the U.S. – in 1969, Apollo 11 safely landed on the moon, the Concorde and Boeing 747 both made their first flights, Woodstock was held, Scooby Doo! Where Are You? began as Looney Tunes made its final farewell, both Richard Nixon and Led Zeppelin made their debuts, and the last model year of the first-generation Chevy Camaro (which debuted in 1967) rolled off the assembly line. Young motorheads across the country who hadn’t been drafted to join the front lines in Vietnam were racing from stoplight to stoplight in their rumbling V8 muscle cars, as the Camaro had emerged as a venerable contender to the Ford Mustang. With the largest of six different engine choices being a 396ci (6.5L V8), the original Camaro RS was the symbol of 1960s American muscle – so symbolic, in fact, that its design reemerged a few decades later. With 545 horsepower generated by the GT-R’s twin-turbo 3.8L engine, it’s the fastest four-seater production car from 0-60mph ever. With performance that rivals cars more than five times its cost, the GT-R has made its existence noted by showing the automotive world its signature four round taillights.
