F I R S T D R I V E

F I R S T D R I V E Robby Gordon and his navigator, multi-time motorcycle off-road racing champion Johnny Campbell, strapped tightly into the Dakar-ready Hummer H3. THE RACE, THE MAN, THE TRUCK S ince its debut, the Traxxas Slash has been all about authenticity, from the body styling and graphic details to the truck’s stance and cornering attitude. The Robby Gordon Edition model continues the tradition. Its body is a fully licensed model built after the Hummer that Robby raced in the Dakar Rally in 2012 and 2013. The Dakar, originally known as the Paris-Dakar Rally, is a race that is held in its modern form across parts of South America. Its original name comes from its course that up until 2008 was run from Paris, France to Dakar, Senegal in Northern Africa. The race was cancelled in 2008 due to a threat of terrorism and then moved to South America in 2009 and assigned a new course routing from Peru and over the Andes Mountains of Argentina. The rally for 2013 was made up of nearly 450 vehicles competing in four classes traversing close to 5,300 miles of mountain, jungle, desert, and everything else you could possibly imagine. Robby competed behind the wheel of his 4,500-pound, 5-speed, LS2 V8-powered Hummer H3 and earned three stage wins before finishing 14th overall. Super Stadium Truck Showcase Along with his involvement in racing of every sort, Robby has started a new off-road racing series under the USAC banner. The Stadium Super Truck (SST) series celebrates its inaugural season with a 12-race schedule of events with the first in Arizona. The series is a throwback to the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Series that was wildly popular through the 1980s and features trucks that are modeled after production trucks and pump out 600 horsepower from their V8 engines. With 20 inches of wheel travel, these trucks will compete in close circuit stadium courses on DOT approved tires you can buy at any tire store. Traxxas has signed on for the 2013 SST season and will field two trucks for the full series. “Stadium Super Trucks are the natural indoor complement to short course off-roading in the Traxxas TORC series,” said Traxxas President Mike Jenkins who will be driving the No. 47 Traxxas Slash SST. “Traxxas is always at the forefront of exposing the fun and excitement of off-road racing and we can’t wait to bring it even closer to home as part of the SST series.” With dates set across the country from April to November, check out the SST series at a track near you.
