F I R S T D R I V E Desert Domination TRAXXAS SLASH ROBBY GORDON DAKAR EDITION WORDS ERICH REICHERT PHOTOS JASON BOULANGER & HOPE MCCALL Robby Gordon is well known for his versatility in many forms of four-wheeled motorsports, but it’s in off-road racing that Robby made his reputation. Robby got his start in desert racing 27 years ago and has become one of the most highly recognizable and winning drivers in the sport behind the wheel of his orange or black Speed Energy racing machines. To pay homage to the racing legend, Traxxas has released the Robby Gordon Edition Dakar Slash. This Slash commemorates and captures the excitement of Robby’s competition in the most famous desert race in the world, the Dakar Rally, and puts you behind the wheel of one of the most unique offroad vehicles on the planet. SPECS Scale: 1/10 Length: 22.4 in. (568mm) Width: 11.65 in. (296mm) Height: 8.4 in. (214mm) Ground clearance: 3.5 in. (89mm) at center of chassis Wheelbase: 13.2 in. (335mm) Weight: 4.8 lb. (2160g) Chassis: Molded plastic tub Price: 0 BEST FOR Robby Gordon fans, desert racing enthusiasts, anyone looking for a tough and fun truck PERFORMANCE Through its lifetime, the Slash has gone relatively unchanged and that’s for good reason; it’s a bunch of fun. Factor in its scale realism and you’ll quickly see why the Robby Gordon Edition Dakar Slash dresses the proven platform with a new body, wheel, and tire combo and a few choice upgrades rather than reinvent the most popular truck in RC. Underneath the new body is the tried and true platform we’ve all fallen in love with over the years and the only change that jumps out is the new chassis color. The black chassis shows less dirt and gives the truck a much tougher look (Note: if you want to black out your Slash, you can buy the chassis separately. It’s also used on the Ford Raptor Slash.). On the dirt, the truck accelerates well and jumps even better. Traxxas’ XL-5 speed control and Titan 12t motor give the Slash plenty of run time and performance without adding a ton of cost. Because it’s modeled after a desert racer that dominates trails and rugged terrain rather than a track, I took the RG Slash to a local mountain bike trail. tire and a good balance of grip and tire wear. Through piles of leaves, over rocks, and through the dirt, the RG Edition Dakar Slash put the power down. Puddles and mud were blasted through without worry, as the Slash’s famously waterproof electronics kept the wet from getting within. Over jumps and off rocks, the truck jumps very level — especially considering its larger and more rectangular body. The roof spoiler on the back not only looks cool, but is also functional at high speed and helped keep the truck pointing forward when I put the pedal to the metal. JUNE 2013 33
